Sustainability
Sustainability is sometimes described as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
As parents with small children, many of my friends and I wonder what life will be like when our kids are our age. I can’t help but wonder, can the planet support human life and well-being in the long-term? And what will that look like?
What Does Climate Change Mean?
Climate change refers to the long-term changes in temperature, precipitation, wind patterns, and other measures of climate that occur over several decades or longer.
Sadly, climate change is primarily caused by human activities, including burning fossil fuels and deforestation, which increase the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and trap more heat from the sun.
Climate change can lead to a wide range of impacts, including:
- Rising sea levels
- More severe weather events, and
- Changes in the distribution of plant and animal species
But there is good news too! Action now can help to change the course of climate change.
Many researchers and experts agree that the best way to address climate change is to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and transition to cleaner forms of energy.
They say this will help slow the warming rate and reduce the severity of future impacts. Yay!
We can also protect and restore ecosystems, which can help remove carbon from the atmosphere and reduce the impacts of climate change.
Stay tuned for more on global climate change news! In the meantime, there are ways we can help at home to do our part to take care of the enviornment.
